The successful candidate will benefit from working in a dynamic environment, Research in Biosciences (Cornwall Campus near Falmouth) School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter. The supervisor of the course, Professor Tom Tregenza.
Disease resistance and interactions between immune system and other fitness traits were investigated in detail in laboratory insects, but little is known in the natural populations. This Teaching Scholarships thesis project is to build on an existing collaboration with Professor Mike Siva-Jothy of the University of Sheffield. Preparatory work has already been done to the function of the immune system in crickets and laboratory work the student is the basis for a proposal to grant NERC great shape and contribute to a proposal by the ERC to consider. Professor Tregenza currently leading a major project funded NERC followed a natural population of the crickets in a field in Spain (Rodriguez-Munoz et al. Science, 2009). By monitoring using SNP genotyping of all people and a wide range of video cameras, we know a lot about the lives of these insects, including how long they live, as in this fight, how often they mate, how many offspring they leave, etc. This Teaching Scholarships project will include monitoring the function of the immune system of crickets for the relationship between immune function and other features of life history view and combines this approach with field and laboratory experiments.

Place and Displacement invites proposals for two Ph.D. projects in thematic areas concerning the exhibition and collection of architecture. Particular priority will be given to projects that consider full-scale practices of preservation and display, and to projects that investigate the historiography of the architectural exhibition. the status of architecture when it is shifted from an object of use into one of display
contemporary cultural expressions involving the ‘use’ of the past, such as re-enactment, re-staging and their relating technologies of display

The Centre for Plasma Astrophysics (CPA) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) accepts applications for one postodoctoral position within the framework of the SWIFF consortium funded by the European Commission within the FP7 program (swiff.eu). Activities Details:

The activities will focus on the development of physical-mathematical models, algorithm and software to study multiple scale processes in the solar corona (flares, CMEs), the propagation of the solar wind and its disturbances and the study of the magnetosphere and its connection with solar activity. The work will be theoretical, focusing on linking different fluid models (e.g. Hall MHD or twi fluid with MHD) and fluid with kinetic models. The work will be based on the extensive previous expertise in the field of high performance computing, space science and its application to space weather at the CPA and within the SWIFF consortium.

The selected candidates will have expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Solar physics, Magnetospheric physics,Solar wind,Expertise on computer programming with C, C++ or Fortran,Plasma physics, astrophysics or space physics, Numerical methods for fluid dynamics, MHD and kinetic physics particle in cell methods.

The researchers will have access to large parallel computer facilities and to a stimulating research environment within the CPA and the SWIFF consortium. A Cancer Research UK funded position exists for a research assistant in the research group of Professor Mary Collins at UCL Division of Infection and Immunity (Bloomsbury Campus, Cancer Institute) directed. The post is funded for 3 years and is in collaboration with Dr Tracey Barrett (Birkbeck College) and Dr Chris Kay (Structural and Molecular Biology, UCL).

The successful candidate will use molecular biology, biophysics, and expression of recombinant proteins / structural biology to the mechanism by which viral proteins activate IKK, the central regulator of NFkappaB signaling probe.

The main requirements

Awards will be given to both M.S. and Ph.D. students through their host institutions, pending available funds, with the majority for M.S. students studying in their home country or region. The Signal Processing Group at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering is looking for a new PhD student within the field of Measurement Systems Engineering. The topic of the research will be on the development of methods for on-line measurement and analysis of paper pulp properties and their connection to paper quality parameters.

We seek candidates with a MSc./Civ.ing. degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar areas, preferably with a strong interest and experience in mathematics, statistics, experimental design and signal processing. Previous experience in the design of measurement systems is also valuable.
The collaborative nature of the project requires the student to be fluent in both Swedish and English, written and spoken.

PhD Reseacher in Computing Sciences Teaching Scholarships

In general, programs perform analysis on user input in order to generate output tailored to user needs. In particular, compilers perform program analyses to check for correctness, provide good feedback on programming errors, and improve performance of generated programs. Such analyses are costly to perform, and at the same time, must often be done in short periods of time, for example because of its use in an interactive editing environment. Extensive analyses and fast execution of such analyses thus are two conflicting requirements.

The project aims to remedy the conflict between the desire to use program analyses and the desire to execute such analyses with sufficiently good performance; the project intends to exploit incrementality to achieve good performance for otherwise time consuming analyses. An incremental program reuses the results of a previous computation to speedily recompute a result when a small change in input is given to the program. The research problem arises because manually rewriting existing non-incremental solutions to an incremental version of the solution often is errorprone and difficult. The project will investigate the automatic generation of incremental programs from non-incremental programs, in particular for compilers and the program analyses which are done as part of the compilation process. The research will take place in the context of the Utrecht Haskell compiler (UHC) and the tools used to construct this compiler, in particular the UUAG Attribute Grammar system.

This project is funded by a research grant from the Netherlands ‘Organization for Scientific Research’ (NWO).

Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated candidate holding a Master’s degree in computer science, with experience and interest in the area of programming language design, functional programming (in particular Haskell), and program analysis. Candidates are expected to have an independent working style and a good knowledge of English, which is an absolute must.
Terms of employment

The candidate is offered a full time position for 4 years. The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave, flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities. The College is seeking to appoint a Knowledge Exchange Post-doctoral Fellow for a period of one year, ending 31 July 2011. The Fellow will be based within the School or Department most appropriate to their research interests/expertise, but must work to develop research projects involving participation from across the College.

The Fellow will draw upon research interests and capacities which already exist within the College, but will also add value by bringing a new focus, project and activities. The Fellow will develop identifiable outputs within the period of the Fellowship, by which performance can be monitored.

Outputs will focus on the development of research projects and applications for research funding with a significant knowledge exchange (KE) element. This may include specific KE research money e.g. through a KTP partnership, CASE/Collaborative Doctoral Award studentships, or it may include traditional research council/charity funding for projects with a significant KE element.

KE in this context is deemed to include formal partnerships as well as other relationships with non-higher education organisations, including both private and public sector organisations such as museums, libraries, legal and other professions, local government, government departments and so forth. The activities of the Fellow must bring benefits to the College which make a tangible contribution to the growth of KE culture in the College.

Palestinian Graduates (Sciences and Engineering) - who have scored an excellent accumulative average, i.e. well above 80% (usually above 85). They should envisage an academic career at a Palestinian University and be supported in this by their respective universities. Only candidates whose last degree was earned no more than six years ago can apply. All applicants who are already teaching at their respective university are strongly encouraged to apply. After having obtained their Master’s Degree in Germany, alumni can apply for a Ph.D. This program is designed as a faculty-building program.

Students apply to DAAD and at the same time to an International Degree Course in their field of interest at a university of their choice in Germany. SCHOLARSHIPS UK: Dorothy Hodgkin Microsoft Research, a PhD student at the University of Manchester

Summary

The purpose of this student 3-year PhD, they are the Bayesian methods of machine learning to understand the determinants of childhood asthma and allergies to be used. The project will attract an annual allowance of tax-free £ 13, 490 and offers full coverage of international tuition fees. With the launch in October 2010, the project is open to non-EU citizens only * the requirements for Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) of funding.

This interdisciplinary project will use the machinery of Bayesian methods for learning probabilistic graphical models for understanding of the causes of allergies and asthma in childhood. These include a study of interactions between genetic and environmental factors.

Structured Bayesian models are constructed and solved using the Infer.NET library created by Microsoft Research Cambridge and evaluated alongside conventional biostatistical methods, such as multi-level models. The ultimate goal is realistic, responsible for the complex causal network of genetic and environmental factors for developing asthma and allergies in children to identify.

The project will improve a new collaboration between the Northwest Institute for Bio-medical informatics (nibh) at the University of Manchester, and Microsoft Research Cambridge. They are used in genomic data collected Microsoft Shared Genomics project, the successful candidate will receive training on both sites

Revamp of Student Aid Tucked into Health Bill

WASHINGTON — With healthcare dominating House action, President Barack Obama won another domestic policy victory Sunday — passage of a vast rewrite of college aid for needy students.

The legislation, piggybacked on the healthcare bill, would end a four-decade-old program and its reliance on private lenders. It would authorize the government to originate all assistance loans and would use the savings to increase Pell Grants to students.

In the biggest piece of education legislation since No Child Left Behind nine years ago, the bill would direct more than $40 billion over 10 years into higher education, with $36 billion going toward the popular but financially strapped Pell Grant program. Historically black colleges and community colleges would also receive a share.

The Senate takes up the bill next week under the same expedited rules used for healthcare legislation. That means that the Senate could pass the education measure by a simple majority, virtually guaranteeing its success despite the qualms of some Democrats and opposition from Republicans.

House lawmakers passed the bill last year, but in the Senate it did not have 60 votes to overcome a near-certain filibuster.

By riding on the fast-track healthcare bill, the legislation avoided that obstacle.
